Rats and mice don’t need much. A gap the size of a coin is enough for a mouse. A rat can squeeze through a hole about the width of a thumb. Once inside, they find warmth, shelter, and food, and they breed fast. A pair of rats can produce dozens of offspring in a single year.
In Metro Manila, rodent problems show up in every kind of property, from older houses with open drainage to modern condos, offices, warehouses, and food outlets. Here is how to recognize the problem early, why it matters, and what actually works.
Why rodents are more than a nuisance
Rodents carry and spread diseases through their droppings, urine, and bites, and by contaminating surfaces and food. Leptospirosis, which spreads through water contaminated with rodent urine, is a familiar concern here, especially during the rainy season and after flooding.
They also destroy property. Rats gnaw constantly to keep their teeth from overgrowing, and they chew through wiring, insulation, wood, plastic pipes, and packaging. Damaged wiring is a real fire risk. For a business, contaminated stock and a failed inspection can be costly.
Signs of rodent activity
- Droppings. Rat droppings are dark and about the size of a grain of rice. Mouse droppings are smaller.
- Gnaw marks on wood, cables, food packaging, or plastic.
- Scratching or scurrying noises in ceilings and walls, usually at night.
- Greasy rub marks along walls and baseboards where they travel.
- Nests made of shredded paper, fabric, or insulation.
- A stale, musky smell in enclosed areas.
Rodents follow the same routes every night. If you spot droppings or rub marks in the same place repeatedly, you’ve probably found a pathway.
How rodents get in
Most owners assume they came through the front door. In reality, rodents use the parts of a building you rarely look at:
- Gaps around pipes and cables entering the building
- Uncovered drains and damaged sewer lines
- Gaps under doors and roller shutters
- Ceiling voids connected to neighboring units
- Vents and roof openings
- Deliveries, pallets, and stored goods
Trees and cables touching the roof can also give rats a bridge to the upper floors.
Why traps alone don’t solve it
Setting a few traps might catch a rat or two, but it won’t answer the real questions. Where are they entering? Where are they nesting? What are they eating? What keeps attracting more? Without those answers, new rodents replace the ones you removed.
The same goes for poison used carelessly. Rodents that eat poison can die inside walls or ceilings, which creates smell and fly problems. Poison left in open areas also puts children and pets at risk.
What an effective rodent control program includes
Professional rodent control works in three parts:
- Inspection. We identify the species, find the pathways and nesting areas, and assess the conditions drawing them in.
- Control. Strategic baiting and trapping, placed in secured stations where rodents travel and where non-target animals and people can’t reach them.
- Exclusion. Sealing entry points and fixing the structural gaps that let rodents in, so the problem doesn’t repeat.
Exclusion is the part that makes results last. Without it, you are repeatedly paying to remove rodents that will simply return.
What you can do right now
- Store food, grain, and pet food in sealed containers.
- Keep garbage covered and collected regularly.
- Trim vegetation and branches away from the roof and walls.
- Fix leaks. Rodents need water too.
- Reduce clutter in storage areas, garages, and behind appliances.
- Check drain covers and seal obvious holes around pipes.
Rodent control for businesses
For warehouses, restaurants, offices, and retail spaces, rodent control is not a one-time job. It needs scheduled inspections, monitoring, and documented service reports. We explain how this works in our guide to a commercial pest management program.
