You see one cockroach at night and tell yourself it was a one-off. Then you see another one a few days later. By the time you spot them in daylight, the problem is already bigger than you think. Cockroaches are nocturnal, so if they’re out when the lights are on, there is usually a crowded population hiding nearby.
Whether it’s a home kitchen, a café, or a restaurant, here is how cockroach problems actually start, why store-bought sprays rarely solve them, and what a proper treatment plan looks like.
Why cockroaches move in
Cockroaches need three things: food, water, and shelter. Metro Manila gives them plenty of all three. Warm weather, shared walls in condos and townhouses, drainage systems, and busy food businesses make it easy for them to travel and settle.
The most common entry routes are not the ones people expect. Cockroaches arrive in grocery bags, delivery boxes, secondhand appliances, and cardboard packaging. They crawl through drains, utility openings, and gaps beneath doors. In a building with multiple units, they simply walk over from the neighbor’s.
The usual hiding spots
If you want to find where they live, look where it’s dark, warm, and slightly damp:
- Behind and under the refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher
- Inside cabinet corners and the gaps around sink plumbing
- Behind wall sockets and switch plates
- Inside appliance motors, which stay warm
- Floor drains, grease traps, and cracks in tile or wall edges
- Stacks of cardboard, newspapers, and storage boxes
Signs you already have an infestation
Besides seeing live roaches, check for small dark droppings that look like ground coffee or black pepper, egg cases (oothecae) that look like small brown capsules, a musty oily smell in closed cabinets, and smear marks along walls and corners. A strong smell usually means a large population. At that point, the infestation is established.
Why DIY sprays often make it worse
Hardware store aerosols give you a satisfying kill on the roaches in front of you. They do very little to the ones hiding in walls, voids, and drains. Some cockroaches also avoid sprayed areas and relocate, which spreads the problem to new rooms. Over time, repeated use of the same product can lead to populations that are harder to kill.
Killing the visible roaches is not pest control. Pest control means finding the source, treating the places they actually live, and preventing them from coming back.
What professional cockroach control involves
A good cockroach treatment begins with inspection, not spraying. The technician identifies the species, finds the harborage areas, checks how they’re getting in, and assesses what is feeding the population. From there, the plan may combine gel baits, targeted residual treatments in cracks and crevices, drain treatments, and monitoring. The aim is to reach the whole population, including the nymphs and the ones you never see.
Because the treatment is targeted, it uses less product in the open and puts it where it works. That matters in homes with children and pets, and even more in kitchens and food areas.
What you can do to help the treatment work
- Remove food sources. Store dry food in sealed containers and don’t leave pet food out overnight.
- Fix moisture. Repair dripping taps, wipe sinks dry at night, and clean drain covers.
- Take out the trash daily. Use bins with tight lids.
- Cut down cardboard. Break down delivery boxes and don’t store them in the kitchen.
- Seal gaps. Caulk cracks around pipes, baseboards, and cabinets.
- Clean behind appliances regularly. Grease buildup is a feast for roaches.
Cockroaches in cafés, restaurants, and food businesses
For a food business, a cockroach sighting is more than a nuisance. It is a reputation problem, a hygiene problem, and in many cases a compliance problem. One customer photo posted online can undo years of goodwill.
That is why commercial kitchens need a structured pest management program, not occasional spraying. We cover that approach in our article on building a commercial pest control program.
