Mosquito Control in Metro Manila: How to Stop Dengue Mosquitoes Breeding at Home

Oct 9, 2026 | Blog

Every year the pattern repeats. The rains arrive, puddles appear, and within a couple of weeks everyone in the house is swatting at mosquitoes. In the Philippines, that is not only an annoyance. Dengue cases tend to climb during the rainy season, and the mosquitoes responsible, Aedes aegypti, are built to live right alongside us.

Fogging gets a lot of attention, but it is only one piece of mosquito control, and on its own it is rarely enough. Here is what actually reduces mosquito populations around your home or business.

Know your enemy: the dengue mosquito

Aedes mosquitoes are small, dark, and marked with white stripes. They bite mostly during the day, with peaks in the early morning and late afternoon. They prefer to live close to people and breed in clean, still water, not dirty drains as many assume. A bottle cap of water is enough for them to lay eggs.

That last point changes everything. If mosquitoes are breeding on your property, the source is probably something small and easy to overlook.

Where mosquitoes breed around your property

  • Flower pot saucers and plant trays
  • Old tires, buckets, drums, and uncovered water containers
  • Clogged roof gutters and rain downspouts
  • Air conditioner drip trays and refrigerator drain pans
  • Pet water bowls that are not changed daily
  • Construction sites, vacant lots, and unfinished buildings with pooled water
  • Bamboo stumps, coconut shells, and discarded containers

Walk around your property after a rainstorm and look for any spot that holds water for more than a few days. Mosquito eggs can survive dry spells and hatch as soon as water returns, so emptying a container is not enough. Scrub the walls to remove the eggs.

The 4 steps that matter most

Public health guidance in the Philippines promotes a simple set of habits, often summed up as search and destroy, self-protection, seek early consultation, and say yes to fogging only during outbreaks. For property owners, the first step is the one that does most of the work.

  • Remove standing water weekly. Empty, scrub, flip, or cover anything that collects water.
  • Clean the gutters and check that rainwater drains properly.
  • Screen your doors and windows and repair torn mesh.
  • Treat resting areas. Adult mosquitoes rest in dark, cool places such as under furniture, behind curtains, and in closets.

Why fogging alone is not enough

Fogging kills adult mosquitoes that are flying at the time. It does nothing to the eggs and larvae sitting in water, and new adults emerge within days. If the breeding sources remain, the population bounces back quickly. That is why fogging works best as part of a plan and not as the whole plan.

What professional mosquito control looks like

An effective service targets all stages of the mosquito’s life, not only the adults. After inspecting the property, a technician identifies breeding sites, entry points, and resting areas, then builds a treatment around them. That can include larvicide treatment for water that cannot be removed, residual treatment on the surfaces where adults rest, and advice on changes to the property that reduce standing water.

This is the difference between a quick spray and a service that lowers mosquito numbers through the whole season.

Who needs it most

Homes with gardens and open spaces, subdivisions, condominiums with common areas, schools, restaurants with outdoor seating, resorts, and construction sites all benefit from scheduled mosquito control. If someone in your household or neighborhood has had dengue, or if your area has a history of cases, it is worth acting early and not waiting for the next surge.

Other flying insects

Flies and other airborne pests follow a similar logic. Find where they breed, remove what feeds them, and treat the entry points. Our flying insect control service covers mosquitoes, flies, and other airborne pests by targeting breeding areas and the ways they get in.
